Axinite, also known as violet schorl, tumite, and yanolite, is the general name for several boronous double aluminum silicate minerals, which the IMA recognizes as distinct minerals. Its name comes from the Greek word axina (axe), alluding to its axe-shaped crystals derived from highly oblique prisms with equally oblique rhomboidal bases.
