Jet, also called gagates according to the DRAE (Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy), is a shiny black mineraloid. It is a rare variety of humic coal formed during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods,[2] and is therefore used as a semiprecious stone. It originated from the trunks of trees from the Araucaraceae and Protopinaceae families that were buried and subjected to high pressure.
