Chalcocite, also known as chalcocite or chalcosite (both obsolete synonyms; chalcocite is preferred), from the Greek word chalkos, meaning "copper," is a copper sulfide and belongs to the class of sulfide minerals. Its name, chalcocite, assigned by Beudant in 1832, comes from the Greek word chalkos, meaning copper, because it is an ore of this metal.
