Cinnabar is a dark red, high-density mercury sulfide mineral (HgS) that has historically been the primary source of mercury. Also known as vermilion due to its intense color, it was used in ancient times as a pigment in paintings and rituals, though its use is now avoided because of its extreme toxicity. It is found mainly in areas with volcanic activity and hot springs.
