Cuprite is the mineral form of copper(I) oxide, Cu2O. It was first described in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger, who named it after the Latin word cuprum, due to its high copper content.[1] Specifically, Haidinger renamed a mineral that was already known by a variety of names.
