Diopside is a mineral belonging to group VIII according to the Strunz classification. It is a monoclinic pyroxene with the formula MgCaSi₂O₆. It forms a complete solution series with hedenbergite and augite, and partial solid solutions with orthopyroxene and pigeonite.
