Dioptase is a silicate mineral, a copper cyclosilicate ranging in color from deep green to bluish-green. It is characterized by its brittleness, vitreous luster, and hexagonal crystals. Its name derives from the Greek word for cleavage lines, which are visible through the crystals. Although not an inexpensive copper ore, it is highly prized by collectors and is sometimes used in jewelry and as a pigment.
