Goethite is the mineral form of iron(III) oxyhydroxide, with the formula FeO₂H. In the Strunz classification, it belongs to group 04 (oxides and hydroxides). Johann Georg Lenz named this mineral goethite in 1806 in honor of the German poet, novelist, philosopher, and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
