Magnetite is an iron mineral composed of ferrous-ferric oxide (Fe2+Fe3+2O4). It probably owes its name to the ancient Greek region of Magnesia. However, a fable by Pliny the Elder attributes the name to a shepherd named Magnes who discovered this mineral on Mount Ida, observing that it adhered to the nails of his shoes.
