Celestite is a mineral variety of strontium sulfate and the main source of strontium. Its name derives from 'caelestis', alluding to the blue color of one of its varieties. Its chemical formula is SrSO4. It belongs to the sulfate class and the anhydrous sulfate subclass. It is part of the barite group because it has properties very similar to those of barite (bary sulfate).
