La vanadinite était considérée comme un minéral rare. Découverte par Andrés Manuel del Rio, en 1830, à Zimapán (Mexique). C'est un minéral très lourd mais fragile. Il est normalement transparent ou translucide. Ses cristaux peuvent perdre leur éclat et leur transparence s'ils sont exposés à la lumière.
